Frequently Asked
Questions & Answers
Everything you need to know about working with the Integrated Phenotyping Consortium.
General
What is the Integrated Phenotyping Consortium?
A collaborative network of five core facilities at UC Davis that provides researchers with seamless access to comprehensive phenotyping services through a single coordinated portal — from behavioral assays to genomics.
Who can use consortium services?
UC Davis faculty, staff, and trainees have primary access. External academics, government researchers, and industry partners are also welcome — pricing may vary for external users.
Do I need to use all five facilities?
No. You can request services from a single facility or combine multiple facilities into one integrated project. The consortium coordinates everything regardless of scope.
Submitting a Project
How do I start a project?
Visit the Submit a Project page, choose a template that fits your needs (or start a custom request), and fill out the form. A coordinator will follow up to discuss details and timelines.
What are project templates?
Pre-configured forms for common project types like proteomics panels, antibody characterization, genomics workflows, and custom instrumentation requests. They save time by pre-filling relevant fields.
Can I modify a template after selecting it?
Yes. Templates pre-populate the form but every field remains editable. Add, remove, or change any details before submitting.
What happens after I submit?
A consortium coordinator reviews your submission, reaches out to clarify any details, connects you with the relevant facility contacts, and helps finalize your study design and timeline.
Samples & Species
What species do you work with?
Most services are optimized for mouse models, but many facilities accommodate rats, other rodents, and non-rodent species. Contact us to discuss your specific model.
Can I ship samples from off-campus?
Yes. Several facilities accept shipped tissue, blood, and other specimens. Coordinators will provide shipping protocols and requirements during the consultation phase.
Pricing & Timelines
How is pricing determined?
Each facility maintains its own fee schedule. Rates differ for UC Davis internal users, other UC campuses, government agencies, and commercial entities. You’ll receive a detailed quote after consultation.
How long does a typical project take?
Timelines vary widely by service type. Simple histopathology may take 1–2 weeks; a multi-facility phenotyping study could span several months. Your coordinator provides a detailed timeline during study design.
Can I use grant funds?
Absolutely. All consortium facilities accept federal and non-federal grant funding. We can provide quotes formatted for grant budgets and help with justification language for proposals.
Data & Results
How will I receive my data?
Results are delivered as structured data packages — typically a combination of raw data files, processed results, analysis reports, and quality metrics. Delivery format depends on the service.
Do you provide analysis and interpretation?
Yes. Most facilities include standard analysis in their services. Extended bioinformatics, statistical consulting, and custom analysis pipelines are available through the Genomics Shared Resource and collaborating biostatisticians.
Is there support for publications?
Yes. We provide methods language, acknowledgment text, and publication-quality figures. Facility staff are available for co-authorship where their intellectual contribution warrants it.
